Keirin is a track cycling event where starting positions are determined after the riders draw lots. They begin when a pacer, or derny bike, approaches. The derny bike begins at a deliberately slow speed of about 25 kilometers per hour. Keirin races are 2 kilometers in length or eight laps on a 250-meter track. Riders gradually increase their speeds throughout the race. They battle for first after the derny bike leaves the track, about 600 to 700 meters before the finish line.
