Just days after Ukrainian forces entered the city, President Volodymyr Zelensky pays a surprise visit to Kherson, where he sings the national anthem and praises his country's people and services. On Friday, Russia withdrew around 30,000 troops from the southern Kherson region.
President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday visited the newly liberated city of Kherson in southern Ukraine after Russian forces retreated from the strategic hub near the Black Sea. This is definitely a symbolic victory for Ukraine but does it mean the fighting has halted? FRANCE 24's reporter Jonathan Walsh responds and tells us about what he could see when he was in Ukraine.
In his daily address, Ukrainian PresidentVolodymyr Zelensky says that "today is a historical day" because Ukraine is "taking back Kherson". "As of now, our defenders are on the outskirts of the city. But special units are already in the city," Zelensky adds. Ukraine had earlier on Friday said its forces were entering the southern city of Kherson after Russia announced its troops had retreated from the only regional capital it has captured after nearly nine months fighting.
"We will identify all those responsible" for the strike on a residential building in Odessa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says in his nightly address. In an emotional plea, Zelensky notes that a three-month old baby girl was among those killed. Zelensky also accuses the Russian 'filtration' camps, criticised during the Chechnyan war by human rights groups, of being 'concentrations camps' by another name.
