Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative Party's backbench 1922 Committee, announces that Rishi Sunak and Liza Truss have made it to the final ballot of Conservative members to decide who will replace Boris Johnson as the next party leader and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, with Penny Mordaunt knocked out. Sunak led the last of five ballots of Tory lawmakers, winning 137 votes, ahead of Truss on 113, while junior trade minister Penny Mordaunt was eliminated after getting 105 votes. IMAGES
The Chair of the 1922 Committee announces the results of the first round of voting for the Conservative leadership content. Bob Blackman, the chair of the committee, announces that staunch right-winger and former Home Secretary Priti Patel, is eliminated from the race. Receiving 28 votes and leading the race in this round of voting is former immigration minister Robert Jenrick. Also in the race are Kemi Badenoch, James Cleverly, Mel Stride and Tom Tugendhat. Speaking just after announcing the winners of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, the Chair of Norway's Nobel Committee, Breit Reiss-Andersen, says "this prize is not addressing President Putin", before adding that his government "is representing an authoritarian government that is suppressing human rights activists." The 2022 Prize's joint winners are: jailed Belarusian activist, Ales Bialiatski, Russian human rights organisation, Memorial, and Ukrainian human organisation, the Center for Civil Liberties.
