Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the influential 1922 Committee of backbench MPs, is vague about whether one or two candidates would be likely to run for the Conservative Party leadership after the resignation of Liz Truss. “The party rules say there will be two candidates unless there is only one candidate" he says. The Chair of the 1922 Committee announces the results of the first round of voting for the Conservative leadership content. Bob Blackman, the chair of the committee, announces that staunch right-winger and former Home Secretary Priti Patel, is eliminated from the race. Receiving 28 votes and leading the race in this round of voting is former immigration minister Robert Jenrick. Also in the race are Kemi Badenoch, James Cleverly, Mel Stride and Tom Tugendhat. Another round of voting will take place next week, eliminating one further candidate. SOUNDBITE
