NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says Russia must free jailed US journalist Evan Gershkovich, after prosecutors sent his case to court on espionage charges. "He's conducting his work as a journalist for free media and therefore he should be released," Stoltenberg tells journalists at a NATO meeting in Brussels. SOUNDBITE
Detained US journalist Evan Gershkovich has retained his "fighting spirit" his lawyer tells journalists after the Wall Street Journal reporter was denied bail in a hearing at a Moscow court on Tuesday. Gershkovich was arrested on March 29, accused of espionage, making him the first foreign journalist arrested for spying since the Soviet era. "He is prepared to prove his right to freely practice journalism" says Maria Korchagina, Gershkovich's lawyer, "he is ready to defend himself." SOUNDBITE

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says that the country's ambassador in Moscow, Lynne Tracy, was able to visit Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in prison. "I can report based on what Ambassador Tracy has said that he's in good health and good spirits, considering the circumstances. We continue to call for his immediate release from this unjust detention," Blinken told reporters in Japan after G7 talks. SOUNDBITE
