In the long jump competition, the athlete who jumps the longest wins. The athlete begins running from his or her starting position and takes off from the designated foul line, landing in a sand pit with distance markers. If the athlete happens to cross the front edge of the foul line, this results in a foul jump.
In high jump, athletes are competing against each other in jumping as high as possible over a horizontal bar. Each athlete has three attempts at each height. If an athlete fails to perform jump for three consecutive times, he or she would be eliminated.
Olympic weightlifting is comprised of two events: the snatch, and the ‘clean and jerk.’ In the snatch, the bar is lifted from the floor to above the athlete’s head in one single motion. The clean and jerk motion is a two-stage movement, lifting the bar from the ground to shoulder height, and then overhead.
Competitors participating in trampoline must make ten contacts with the trampoline during their routines. Each routine may last up to 90 seconds. Each athlete will perform two sets of 10 routines – single, double or triple somersaults, with and without twists.
In the swimming events, swimmers must complete a set distance inside the pool in the shortest possible time. There are ten lanes, each 2.5 meters wide. There are four styles swimmers can participate in: the freestyle, breaststroke, the butterfly stroke, the backstroke.
