The US will start sending in daily flights to evacuate Afghan interpreters and others who assisted the Americans and are fearful for their lives due to the Taliban's sweeping offensive across Afghanistan, US State Department spokesman Ned Price announces. "Additional flights will begin landing daily and you’re going to see the total number grow very quickly," Price tells reporters. SOUNDBITE
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken tells reporters that the US has opened its special immigrant visa program to 8,000 more Afghans, expanding the eligibility of refugee admissions beyond the roughly 20,000 Afghans who have applied under a program for interpreters who assisted US forces and diplomats. US State Department spokesman Ned Price announces during his press briefing that the United States will use a military base in Virginia to temporarily house Afghan interpreters fleeing their home country, due to the withdrawal of US forces after 20 years of war. SOUNDBITE
