The United States calls for the release of US-Russian journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, sentenced to more than six years in prison for violating strict military censorship laws. The United States renews calls for Russia to free Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich after his detention was extended until August 30. "The claims against Evan are baseless and we continue to call for his immediate release as well as for the immediate release of Paul Whelan," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters, referring to Gershhovich and detained former marine Whelan.
