NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says Russia must free jailed US journalist Evan Gershkovich, after prosecutors sent his case to court on espionage charges. "He's conducting his work as a journalist for free media and therefore he should be released," Stoltenberg tells journalists at a NATO meeting in Brussels. SOUNDBITE

"We condemn" Russia's detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says. "This espionage charges are ridiculous. The targeting of American citizens by Russian government is unacceptable", she tells reporters. SOUNDBITE
