The sentencing by a Russian court of US reporter Evan Gershkovich to 16 years in prison on espionage charges raises "serious concerns," a UN spokesman says. SOUNDBITE
Targeting hospitals in Ukraine is a "war crime," a senior UN official tells an emergency meeting of the Security Council, called in the wake of deadly strikes that Kyiv blamed on Russia. "Intentionally directing attacks against a protected hospital is a war crime and perpetrators must be held to account," says Joyce Msuya, acting under-secretary for humanitarian affairs. SOUNDBITE

Gershkovich, an American Wall Street Journal reporter is being held in Moscow on espionage charges which he denies. The court hearing was attended by representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Russia. He was arrested during a reporting trip at the end of March last year in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg and could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted. IMAGES

The United States says that Russia rejected a new proposal to free two detained Americans, Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan. "We have made a number of proposals, including a substantial one, in recent weeks," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters. "That proposal was rejected by Russia," he says. US President Joe Biden urges the UN General Assembly to stop Russia's "naked aggression" in Ukraine, saying otherwise that the independence of all states would be at risk. "We have to stand up to this naked aggression today to deter other would-be aggressors tomorrow," Biden says. SOUNDBITE
