Russia vetoes a nine-month extension of a key Syria aid route at the UN Security Council, a day after the vital mechanism providing life-saving support to millions of people expired. While many council members including the United States and Britain have called for a full year extension, Russia has insisted on just six months and rejected the nine-month compromise proposed by Switzerland and Brazil. The UN Security Council adopts a resolution extending a system for cross-border aid to Syria by six months, the duration demanded by Russia while other members had sought a full year.
