Hundreds of firefighters backed by planes and helicopters battle a massive forest fire in the Harz mountains of central Germany for the second day. The blaze began in the Harz Mountains on 6 September prompting the evacuation of about 500 hikers and other tourists from the area. IMAGES
An update is given by the London Fire Brigade after a fire at a block of flats in Dagenham in East London. Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne who is the on site Incident Commander says firefighters have been working “arduously through the night to bring this fire under control and I can confirm we have now stood down the major incident.” SOUNDBITE
