Images show houses up in flames in the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut as artillery fire roars through the area. Bakhmut found itself on the path of Russian troops pushing to take over the Donetsk region, causing many of its residents to flee. Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky has called for civilians to leave the frontline region bearing the brunt of the Kremlin's offensive. IMAGES
"We also regret the order to deploy Russian troops into eastern Ukraine, reportedly on a peacekeeping mission," says United Nations Under-Secretary-General Under-Secretary-General for peacebuilding Rosemary DiCarlo. "These developments follow the decision to order a mass evacuation of civilian residents of Donetsk and Lugansk into the Russian Federation. We are concerned by the escalating shelling across the contact line." SOUNDBITE
The United States is aware of Russia's announcement that it will withdraw troops from its border with Ukraine and now awaits Moscow to actually do so, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price says. "We've heard words," Price says during a news briefing in Washington. "I think what we'll be looking for is action." SOUNDBITE

Technicians inspect the site where a major television tower was toppled in Ukraine's war-battered city of Kharkiv following bombardments from Russia forces.
