The United States says that President Vladimir Putin's imposition of martial law in annexed Ukrainian territories shows his claim people wanted to join Russia was a "lie." "President Putin annexed these regions claiming that there were individuals in these regions who so desperately sought refuge from the Ukrainian state that they wanted to join Mother Russia," State Department spokesperson Ned Price tells reporters. Protesters have been building barricades on Tuesday near a bridge leading from downtown Yangon to the impoverished Hlaing Thayar township which is under martial law. Sunday was the deadliest day so far in the six weeks since the army deposed Suu Kyi's government, with the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners reporting 74 killed on Sunday after the violent suppression of anti-coup unrest across Myanmar. Many of those deaths came from the Hlaing Tharyar township, a garment-producing area in the commercial hub. IMAGES
