Europe's first common mobile phone charger is unveiled
The EU parliament passes a new law requiring USB-C to be the single charger standard for all new smartphones, tablets and cameras from late 2024. SOUNDBITE
Mikhail Vaga, a 19-year-old student from Minsk, invented the gyroscope powerbank which transforms human kinetic energy into electricity which can charge gadgets. Vaga set up a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to receive backing for his innovative idea, and his project raised over $50,000 in two weeks. Top backers already received the powerbanks from the first production run for $79 apiece, and Vaga is now preparing for mass-production.
Inventor Aydar Hayrullin from the Russian city of Ufa created the ultimate survival device, a gadget called the Tengu which converts heat from an open flame to electricity. All you need is some loose brush to get the fire going, and Tengu can fully charge your phone in an hour and a half. The generator takes a bit of time to gather enough energy, but users can check if its ready with a special lamp. Tengu uses technology similar to that found on the Mars rover. The energy is capable of charging any gadget that it’s connected to Tengu via USB port. The invention has already won investment backing and received over $10,000 from Russian crowdfunding site Boomstarter. Aydar is getting ready to mass produce Tengu to meet global demand for his unique device.
Samsung delighted their fans by making the Galaxy S7 phones waterproof again. The phones can withstand being under at least a meter of water and for at least 30 minutes. But it turns out the phones don’t just handle being dunked — they also know when they’re wet. S7 will warn you if it detects any moisture lurking in the one weak spot in any waterproof phone design: its charging port. One user reported that his phone would no longer charge after performing a dunk test. When he plugged his Samsung fast charger in, the phone displayed a message that moisture had been detected in the charging port and the current never started flowing.
