More than 1,000 people have been evacuated in the Spanish regions of Valencia (south-east) and Aragon (north-east) where forest fires have already burnt some 900 hectares, according to local authorities. Four hundred firefighters, rescue workers and military personnel, fifteen planes, seaplanes and helicopters worked to extinguish the flames, according to the Valencia rescue service. A nearby field hospital was set up and the Red Cross opened a reception centre for evacuees in a gymnasium in the town of Segorbe. Spain was hit last summer by some 500 fires that burned over 300,000 hectares of land, making it the most affected European country, according to the European Forest Fire Information System. IMAGES
A wildfire in the northern part of Tenerife island, affecting parts of the municipalities of Arafo and Candelaria, was approximately 130 hectares in size. According to the local authorities, it is a "complicated" area, and the main goal is to slow the advance of the fire towards inhabited areas. A number of villages have been evacuated as a precaution. A wildfire in a popular resort on the Greek island of Lesbos is destroying homes and forcing evacuations of tourists and residents. Images show the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupting as it belches out more lava and forces another 500 people to flee. The Cumbre Vieja on Spain's Canary Islands volcano has forced a total of 6,000 people from their homes and destroyed around 100 properties since it erupted on Sunday afternoon. A vast river of molten lava from the volcano continues to destroy everything in its path as it edges towards the sea, where its arrival is expected to generate clouds of toxic gases. IMAGES
