More than 1,000 people evacuated from an area threatened by a violent forest fire wake up in a gymnasium in Bormes-les-Mimosas, in the Var department of France. Images show firefighters in Spain's tourist island of Tenerife battling a major wildfire. The firefighters are set to deploy extra aircraft as renewed heat and wind threatened recent progress in bringing the blaze under control. Friday's firefighting efforts "progressed well, although the fire is still out of control", Canary Islands regional president Fernando Clavijo told reporters in a late-night briefing. IMAGES
Hundreds of firefighters continue to battle Spain's first major forest fire of the year, as authorities say that they're beginning to make headway in limiting the blaze. "The overall development is positive," firefighters in the province of Castellon, where the fire broke out on Thursday afternoon, said on Twitter. The fire has already burnt 3,800 hectares of vegetation and led to the evacuation of 1,500 people in the Valencia area. More than 500 men are still fighting the flames. IMAGES
Italian firefighters and other emergency services evacuate residents fom the town of Senigallia after at least seven people died when violent storms in the centre of the country flooded roads and homes. The Corriere della Sera newspaper said about 400 millimetres (16 inches) of rain fell in two hours -- about the quantity normally recorded in six months in this zone. IMAGES
