Le Pape aurait autorisé l’écoute téléphonique de l’homme d’affaires pour appuyer le procès. L’ONU mènerait une enquête sur le Pape François pour des écoutes téléphoniques dans un contentieux immobilier, révèle le média britannique The Telegraph le 16 juin 2024. Raffaele Mincione, un homme d’affaires britannique, a déposé plainte auprès de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour plusieurs abus autorisés par le chef suprême de l’Église Catholique lors d’un procès au Vatican. Rodney Dixon, l’avocat de Raffaele Mincione, affirme que le Pape a approuvé l’écoute téléphonique et l’interception de mails lors de l’enquête contre son client. Le Pape François pourrait se baser sur d’anciennes lois qui lui confèrent ces pouvoirs. Rodney Dixon estime que « cette décision a été prise sans énoncer de raisons précises, sans supervision judiciaire, indépendante et impartiale, ni mécanisme permettant de contester la mise en œuvre de la surveillance ». La méthode de surveillance prétendument employée par le Vatican n’a pas été précisée.
