Nicolas Chafoulais, whose daughter Fiona was five years old when she died from injuries sustained in 2013, arrives at court in Lyon. The fourth trial of the girl's mother, Cécile Bourgeon and her ex-companion Berkane Makhlouf opens before the Rhône criminal court. Bourgeon and Makhlouf initially reported the child missing before admitting four months later they had killed her and buried the body. In 2016 Makhlouf was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the crime, the mother to five years. The child's body is still missing. IMAGES

A Malaysian court sentenced a South African national to death on Thursday for trafficking methamphetamine. The High Court said the defendant failed to raise reasonable doubt in the prosecution’s case against Deon Jacobus Alfred Cornelius, who arrived in Penang in October 2013 with 1.9 kilogrammes of methamphetamine hidden in a compartment of his laptop bag.
