Russian President Vladimir Putin wants "to use winter as a weapon of war" in his Ukrainian operation, says NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Bucharest, ahead of a meeting with the alliance's foreign ministers. A weapon based on Russia's attempt "to deprive the Ukrainians of water, electricity, light and heating" says Stoltenberg. SOUNDBITE
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says it is "not too late" for Ukraine to win the war, promising President Volodymyr Zelensky that more support is on the way to Kyiv as Russian forces advance. "Ukraine has been outgunned for months, forced to ration its ammunition... But it's not too late for Ukraine to prevail," the NATO secretary general says at a press conference with Zelensky. During a joint press conference with Dutch and Belgian Prime Ministers Mark Rutte and Alexander De Croo in The Hague, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine is "realistic" that it would not be able to join NATO while still fighting Russia. "But we want to get a very clear message that we will be in NATO after the war," he adds. SOUNDBITE
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warns that the eastern Ukrainian town of Bakhmut may fall into Russian hands in the coming days following months of intense fighting."We can not rule out that Bakhmut may eventually fall in the coming days," Stoltenberg tells reporters in Stockholm on the sidelines of a meeting of EU defence ministers.
