A fire at a primary school dormitory which killed at least 17 children in central Kenya is an "injury to the republic", interior Minister Kithure Kindiki says in a statement during a visit to the scene where he also offered condolences to families of the victims. "The country has woken up this morning to very devastating news," he says. "This injury is not an injury to Nyeri county, it's an injury to the republic of Kenya." SOUNDBITE
Anxious parents wait for news outside a primary school in central Kenya, after an overnight fire in a dormitory kills at least 17 children and injured several others. Police say the blaze in Nyeri county's Hillside Endarasha Academy broke out at around midnight, while the children were sleeping. There are fears there could be more victims in the damaged building. Some 800 pupils, between the ages of roughly five and 12 attend the institution. IMAGES
