Bullet holes are visible on fences and signs at the Kasindi border post in eastern DR Congo's Beni territory on the border with Uganda, after two people were killed and several others injured when UN peacekeepers opened fire during an incident. UN chief Antonio Guterres says he is "outraged" about the incident after the UN force MONUSCO admitted that some of its peacekeepers had opened fire "for unexplained reasons", adding that arrests had already been made. The coffin of slain Congolese independence hero Patrice Lumumba returns to his home region for an emotionally charged tour and burial, more than six decades after his assassination. Lumumba earned his place in history as an anti-colonial icon when the DRC proclaimed independence from Belgium on June 30, 1960, delivering a fiery speech against settler racism. He was overthrown that September before separatists from the southern region of Katanga and Belgian mercenaries executed him and two close supporters, Maurice Mpolo and Joseph Okito, on January 17, 1961. The remains of former DR Congo opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi arrive in Kinshasa from Belgium for a funeral in his home country. Tshisekedi, a revered opponent of authoritarianism in the DR Congo, died in Belgium in 2017. His son, now President Felix Tshisekedi, had vowed to repatriate his remains.
