Strong wind gusts and police patrolling the beaches of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula after Category 2 Hurricane Beryl weakened to a tropical storm, causing damage but no immediate injuries. Now headed for the Gulf of Mexico, Beryl is expected to intensify as it moves toward northeastern Mexico and southern Texas by the end of the weekend, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC). The National Hurricane Center said the storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 100 mph (160 kph) making it a Category 2 hurricane, weaker than earlier in the week as Beryl hit islands in the Caribbean.
