The White House says it had "warned" Iran after President Joe Biden said Tehran was threatening a significant attack on Israel over a strike that destroyed an Iranian consulate building in Damascus. SOUNDBITE
The White House denies that the unfreezing of $6 billion of Iranian funds to help secure the release of five US citizens was effectively a ransom payment. "This is not a payment of any kind. It's not ransom," says White House national security spokesman John Kirby, pushing back against criticism of the deal. SOUNDBITE
Secretary of State Antony Blinken says that the United States will offer no sanctions relief to Iran under a draft deal that would free five Americans. "In any event, in any respect, Iran will not be receiving any sanctions relief," Blinken tells reporters when asked about the expected release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds. SOUNDBITE
Michael Waltz, a Republican representative from Florida, says "authoritarian regimes all over the world" are using the Republicans' struggle to select a speaker for their majority in the US House of Representatives to blame "the messiness of democracy," during a press conference held at the US Congress, engulfed in crisis for a second day running. The US envoy to the United Nations says North Korea's barrage of missile tests made a mockery of the Security Council in veiled criticism of China and Russia. "These members have bent over backwards to justify the DPRK's repeated violations, and in turn they have enabled the DPRK and made a mockery of this council," Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield tells a Security Council session, using the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
