South Africa will close the twenty remaining open land border posts with neighbouring countries for general entries and departures until February 15 to stem the spread of the coronavirus, President Cyril Ramaphosa says on a nationally televised address. SOUNDBITE
JOHANNESBURG - South African President Ramaphosa addresses foreign correspondents in Johannesburg. He talks of land reform, a hot topic after Ramaphosa vowed that the country's constitution would be changed to explicitly allow for the expropriation of land without compensation in a bid to tackle severe inequality 24 years after the end of apartheid.
New Senegalese president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye is urging "more solidarity" between African countries in the face of "security challenges", after his swearing-in in Diamniadio. "I reaffirm Senegal’s commitment to strengthening efforts for peace, security, stability and African integration,' he tells his countrymen and foreign dignitaries in speech after taking the oath of office. South Africa's ruling ANC suspends the country's former president Jacob Zuma from the party. "The NEC concluded that exceptional circumstances exist to justify and warrant an immediate decision to suspend former ANC President Jacob Zuma in line with Rule 25.60," says ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula.
