New ministers for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's government are sworn in in Pretoria. Ramaphosa cut the number of cabinet ministers from 36 to 28 in a move he said would tackle the country's "bloated" government and improve efficiency. Half the new ministers are women, making South Africa one of the world's few gender-balanced governments.
The World Food Programme's (WFP) Assistant Executive Director, Valerie Guarnieri, speaking from Rome during a UN briefing says that "27 million people have been affected by the El Nino-induced drought" in South Africa adding that almost four million children are suffering from "acute malnutrition". South Africa's ruling ANC expels its former leader ex-president Jacob Zuma for leading a rival party into elections following disciplinary proceedings. "Former President Jacob Zuma has actively impugned the integrity of the ANC and campaigned to dislodge the ANC from power while claiming that he had not yet severed his membership," ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula tells a press conference.
