Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeals for his country and the United States to stand together in a landmark speech aimed at rallying support in a US Congress split over his military campaign in Gaza. UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths says that he saw promising signs that the Kerem Shalom crossing from Israel into the Gaza Strip might be opened soon to allow aid in. "We're still negotiating, and with some promising signs at the moment, access through Kerem Shalom... that that may be able to open soon," Griffiths told a press conference in Geneva. IMAGES
The United States says it has seen some improvement by Israel in narrowing targets in its Gaza offensive as it renews a call on its ally to spare civilians. "We've seen a much more targeted request for evacuations" than in the earlier campaign in the north, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters. "So that is an improvement on what's happened before." SOUNDBITE
