UN chief Antonio Guterres warns that Israel's military offensive on Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, in retaliation for their unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel, has created a "humanitarian hellscape" for civilians trapped in the besieged Palestinian territory. SOUNDBITE
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says, following a Security Council vote demanding aid deliveries at scale, that Israel's offensive is the "real problem... creating massive obstacles" to humanitarian shipments. SOUNDBITE
"Guterres does not deserve to be the head of the United Nations. Guterres has not promoted any peace process in the region," says Eli Cohen, the Israeli foreign minister in Geneva. SOUNDBITE
Speaking to MEPs in Brussels, Israel's Foreign Minister Eli Cohen says his country's war with Hamas is "not just the war of the state of Israel," but concerns the "free world". Cohen's address comes more than a month after Hamas' deadly attack on Israel, in which at least 1,400 people were killed. In retribution for the attack, Israeli forces have been conducting air and ground raids in Gaza, where the Hamas-run health ministry says more than 10,500 people have died. SOUNDBITE
