French president Emmanuel Macron kicks off three days of ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy, by presiding over the first ceremony at Plumelec, in the Morbihan region, in memory of the Breton maquisards and the first Free French paratroopers in the SAS, the British special forces, who launched Operation Overlord on the night of 5 to 6 June to open up a new front against Adolf Hitler. Crowds gather in Ghetto Heroes Square in Warsaw on the first day of commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the start of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, with Polish government officials and survivors in attendance.
