Sudanese police fire tear gas as activists call for protests against military rule in the capital Khartoum. Security forces had erected road blocks on bridges crossing the Nile river linking Khartoum to its suburbs, according to AFP reporters, to deter protesters who had vowed to take to the streets in large numbers following a period of relative calm over the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha which ended early last week. Sudan's latest coup derailed a transition to civilian rule, sparking near-weekly protests and a crackdown by security forces that has left at least 114 killed, according to pro-democracy medics. Thousands take to the streets of Niamey, the Nigerien capital, to demand the removal of French troops from the country. Niger has braced for a weekend of planned anti-French rallies as tensions mount between the west African countries new military rulers and its traditional European ally.
