The first flights carrying fresh water and other aid to Tonga finally arrived on Thursday after the Pacific nation’s main airport runway was cleared of ash left by a huge volcanic eruption.
New Zealand's military is sending much-needed drinking water and other supplies, but said the ash on the runway will delay the flight at least a day.
"Boats and large boulders washed ashore," in Tonga, says New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, after a huge volcano eruption at the islands. The Tongan capital Nuku'alofa "is covered in a thick film of volcanic dust," Ardern adds.
