Soaring energy prices have hit French bakers hard and on Monday they marched across Paris to demand more assistance from the government.
More than a hundred contestants took part in Paris' best baguette contest. The lucky winner is Makram Akrout, a baker of Tunisian origin, who has been living in France for 19 years. He will have the opportunity to serve his bread at the presidential palace for a year. "I'm proud, but it is no accident," says the craftsman, refering to the fact that his father was also a baker.
A competition is underway to determine the best baguette in France. From identical ingredients, artisan bakers from all over the country are creating their versions of the famous French bread under at tent pitched on the square outside Notre Dame cathedral.
