The head of the World Health Organization declares the monkeypox outbreak to be a global health emergency -- the highest alarm it can sound. SOUNDBITE
World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus calls an "emergency" meeting of international representatives to discuss the spread of the mpox virus. With mpox spreading outside of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tedros adds that the WHO emergency committee would meet "as soon as possible" to advise him on "whether the outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern". The Covid-19 pandemic, which for over three years has killed millions of people, wreaked economic havoc and deepened inequalities, no longer constitutes a global health emergency, says World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. SOUNDBITE
Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, says he will reconvene the monkeypox emergency committee by the week of the 18 July at the latest "so they are updated on the current epidemiology and evolution of the outbreak and implementation of counter-measures".
