Gershkovich, an American Wall Street Journal reporter is being held in Moscow on espionage charges which he denies. The court hearing was attended by representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Russia. He was arrested during a reporting trip at the end of March last year in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg and could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted. IMAGES

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insists that a special tribunal must be created to hold Russia to account for its "aggression". "When there is a tradition of inevitable punishment of aggression, then there will be a tradition of guaranteed non-repetition of aggression," he tells diplomats and officials at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which has issued an arrest warrant for Russia's Vladimir Putin over a war crime charge.
