Nutrition labelling in the EU: Should food have an EU-wide, front-of-pack label?

Description

Europe has been mulling an EU-wide food labelling system, ostensibly in order to help people make healthier choices. Nutrition information is standard on the back or side of food packaging, of course. But now there are efforts to put labels on the front of items.

  • Does Being Lactose Intolerant Mean You Can't Eat Cheese? Ever?

There's a myth floating around that if you are lactose intolerant, you shouldn't eat cheese. And according to Business Insider, it's a pretty dangerous myth. That's because nutritionists say skipping out on any food group can cause you to miss out on certain critical nutrients. Not all dairy products contain high amounts of lactose. In fact, people who are lactose intolerant actually tend to do quite well with cheese--especially hard cheeses. A federal judge has nixed a Trump administration proposal that would have kicked off nearly 700,000 American adults from the USDA's food stamps program. The proposed change to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, or SNAP, would have made it more difficult for Americans to qualify for the program. The DC US District Court said the proposal leaves 'states scrambling and exponentially increasing food insecurity for tens of thousands of Americans.' The ruling noted the USDA has been 'icily silent' about how many American adults would have been denied SNAP benefits during the pandemic. According to Business Insider, as of May 2020, SNAP rosters added over 6 million new enrollees.

  • People Love Salted Caramel--But Why?

Scientists have come closer to solving the mystery of what humankind has known for some time: adding salt to fruit makes it taste sweeter. Researchers at Tokyo Dental Junior College discovered it's not just a gene that allows the brain to register the taste of sweetness. Nor is it the T1R receptors on the tastebuds. Previous studies found disabling those cells had no effect in stopping the ability to perceive sweetness. Science Magazine reports the final type of receptor employs both pathways and also responds to fatty acids and umami flavors. This is an interesting piece of work that suggests the sweet taste is more complicated than we previously realized. Kathryn Medler, Taste Signaling Expert University of Buffalo
