Police and bulldozers continue to demolish tin huts of the Talus 2 shantytown on the French Indian Ocean island of Mayotte as part of a long-promised operation to combat substandard housing and illegal migration. IMAGES
A shanty town in the north of Mayotte is demolished to make way for a high school, amid an operation to clear slums on the Indian Ocean island territory and expel illegal migrants, which has sparked clashes between local youth and security forces. The operation, called Operation Wuambushu ("Take Back" in the local language), aims to improve living conditions for Mayotte locals in France's poorest department, one of several French overseas territories that span the Caribbean to the Pacific. As cyclone Belal hits French island Reunion, broken tree branches litter the ground and residents hunker down in their homes under a strict lockdown in the town of Saint Gilles-les-Hauts. Belal isn't as intense of a storm as originally forecast and cyclone alert was downgraded from purple, its highest level, to red at 1pm local time to allow emergency services to intervene and assess the damage.
