Paraguayan presidential candidate Santiago Pena casts his ballot at a polling station in Asuncion. The 44-year-old economist and former finance minister hopes to continue the rule of the ruling conservative Colorado Party that has governed almost continually since 1947 - but his opponent, lawyer Efrain Alegre of the Concertacion center-left coalition, is leading narrowly in the opinion polls.
