A powerful earthquake struck a remote border region of Afghanistan overnight killing at least 1,000 people and injuring hundreds more, officials said Wednesday, with the toll expected to rise as desperate rescuers dig through collapsed dwellings.
Officials announced the latest death toll at a press conference in Kabul, and warned that dozens more people might still be trapped under the rubble in several villages.
The world health organisation says it's worried about areas of Turkey and Syria where there is no information from following Monday's earthquake. Over in Syria meanwhile, the quake hit a part of the country that's divided between the government and the opposition. FRANCE 24's Nicholas Rushworth tells us more.
