Afghan authorities scramble to reach earthquake zone, toll at 1,000 dead

Afghan authorities struggled on Thursday to reach a remote area hit by an earthquake that killed 1,000 people but poor communications and a lack of proper roads hampered their efforts, officials said.

Death toll of Haiti quake soars to 1,297, countries sending aid

Port-au-Prince, Aug 15 (EFE).- Haitian authorities on Sunday raised to 1,297 the death toll in the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on the weekend.Civil Protection reported that 1,054 people are known to have died in the Sud Department, another 122 in Nippes and 119 in Grand'Anse, all of these provinces on the country's slender southwestern peninsula, while another two people lost their lives in northwest Haiti.Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government on Sunday sent the beleaguered nation 30 tons of supplies, including food, medicine and potable water, to help the general populace after the powerful Saturday quake that injured at least 2,800 people. At least 1 dead in rocket attack on center of Afghan capital

Kabul, Dec 12 (EFE/EPA).- At least one person was killed and another injured Saturday when a series of rockets were fired into the center of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul. It was the second such attack to rock the Afghan capital in less than a month.
