The separatist leaders of four Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine said Tuesday they were planning to hold votes starting later this week for the territories to become part of Russia as Moscow loses ground in the war it launched. The announcements of referendums starting Friday came after a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin said they were needed, as FRANCE 24's Nick Holdsworth explains.
Russian strikes have hit key cities across Ukraine this Tuesday, including the capital Kyiv - where two residential buildings are reported have been hit by missiles. The mayors of Lviv (in the west) and Kharkiv (in the north east) also say their cities have been struck. Power cuts are being reported as it appears energy facilities have been hit as well. FRANCE 24's reporter Luke Shrago, who is currenlty in the Mykolaiv region, tells us more.
