French President Emmanuel Macron and his allies were scrambling for a way out of political deadlock Monday (June 20) after losing their absolute parliamentary majority in a stunning blow for the president. FRANCE 24's Ellen Gainsford tells us more.
French President Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance was in danger of falling short of a majority after a first round of parliamentary elections on Sunday that saw a surge in support for a new leftwing coalition. Macron's "Ensemble" (Together) alliance ran neck-and-neck with new leftwing coalition NUPES in Sunday's first round, with both scoring around 25-26 percent of the popular vote. Data Scientist Rémi Louf gives his perspective.
In France, the parliamentary elections are almost seen as a simple procedure that confirms the president's hold on power with a majority in parliament. A result of the fact the poll takes place just a few weeks after the presidential election. But will this year be different? Emmanuel Macron secured his second term as president fairly comfortably, with over 58% of the vote in the second round. But this may have been less of endorsement, and more of a resigned move to block the far-right.
Aline-Florence Manent, a historian and French politics expert at University college London, reminds us many thought Emmanuel Macron would not reach a majority in the national Assembly after the Parliamentary election.
