  • One million volunteers in Thailand join fight against coronavirus

Pathum Thani, Jun 17 (EFE/EPA).- Local volunteers are proving to be a key part of Thailand's fight against COVID-19 in small communities and remote villages by helping authorities in identifying possible carriers of the virus, with their numbers exceeding the 1 million mark across the country. These volunteers, with hardly any medical training and thermometers in hand, go from house to house to measure the temperature of the residents and inform about visits of family members from outside the province..(Camera: DIEGO AZUBEL).SHOTLIST: VILLAGE HEALTH VOLUNTEER PIYAMPORN HUADKHAM PERFORMING HEALTH CHECKUPS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS LIVING IN THE CHAO FAH LOCALITY OF THE PATHUM THANI PROVINCE, THAILAND.SOUNDBITES: PIYAMPORN HUADKHAM, VILLAGE HEALTH VOLUNTEER (IN THAI).TRANSLATIONS:1.)I first became health volunteer because my mom became one too after she retired. At that time, I quit my job to raise my child so I had free time. I saw the works that my mom was doing, which were tiring. So, I joined the program (Village Health Volunteer (VHV)) so that I could help her. Volunteering makes my heart at ease and very happy. I have been a full-time Village Health Volunteer ever since after the 2011 Thailand floods. 2.) The main duty of the Village Health Volunteer (VHV) (regarding the pandemic) is to raise awareness about protection measures against coronavirus. What I can do (as a volunteer) is to distribute whatever donations I can find, such as cleaning alcohol gel, fabric masks, etc. to people in the community and tell them to avoid large gathering, practice social distancing, wear a mask and frequently wash their hands.
