Greek firefighters battle a major wildfire on the country's second-largest island of Evia. The fire started near a protected wildlife habitat at about 3:00 am (0000 GMT) and was quickly spread by strong winds forcing the evacuation of hundreds of villagers. IMAGES

Images show an area near the village of Navi on the Greek island of Rhodes left charred by wildfires, which have raged around the country for weeks. Hundreds of firefighters backed by European Union reinforcements have been struggling to contain the flames on Rhodes, as well as on the islands of Corfu and Evia, in addition to a new front that erupted on July 26 in central Greece.
