  • First person charged under Hong Kong security law remains in custody

Hong Kong, Jul 6 (EFE/EPA).- The first person charged under Hong Kong’s new national security law on Monday remained in police custody after a court rejected his bail application. Tong Ying-kit, 23, is the first person charged under the new national security law for inciting secession and terrorism during the July 1 protest. The defendant faces charges of terrorism and subversion of state power (a crime commonly used in China against activists and dissidents), two of the four crimes typified in the new regulations. The 23-year-old man was driving his motorcycle down a narrow street when a group of riot police hit the road, and ended up running over three of them before falling to the ground, according to a video of the events published by the press. The controversial law is seen by Hong Kong lawyers and activists as the possible end to the rights and freedoms enjoyed in the city against the rest of China, although the local government insists that it will only affect an "extremely small minority" of people. • Thousands leave Hong Kong for UK due to China's national security law

Hong Kong, Aug 9 (EFE/EPA).- Thousands of Hong Kong residents are taking up the United Kingdom’s offer of safe haven and a path to British citizenship rolled out in response to Beijing's crackdown on the former British colony and the introduction of a national security law that curtails freedom of speech. The British government expects roughly 300,000 to take up the offer over the next five years. The National Security Law that Beijing imposed on the semi-autonomous Chinese city of Hong Kong this time last year silenced the protests that erupted in 2019 but also led to mass arrests, the marginalization of the political opposition and prompted many citizens to consider emigrating.
