View from Taiwan's outlying island of Kinmen as China begins military drills. China on Thursday encircled Taiwan with naval vessels and military aircraft in war games aimed at punishing the self-ruled island after its new president vowed to defend democracy. IMAGES
Taiwanese first responders and civilians participate in drills simulating emergency scenarios including missile strikes and chemical attacks, as part of an island-wide civilian disaster preparedness drill. On Tuesday, Chinese warships and aircraft were still operating around Taiwan, the island's defence ministry said, a day after Beijing declared an end to its massive war games. IMAGES
The Taiwan Strait seen from Pingtan, a southeastern island that is China's nearest point to Taiwan. China was due to hold live-fire drills on Monday to round off three days of military exercises in response to Taiwan's president meeting with the US House speaker.
