Humanity is suffering an "extreme heat epidemic," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warns, calling for action to limit the impacts of heat waves intensified by climate change. SOUNDBITE
UN head Antonio Guterres warns that humanity is "just one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation," with the world facing a threat "not seen since the height of the Cold War." Guterres opens the start of a conference of countries belonging to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by saying, "we have been extraordinarily lucky so far. But luck is not a strategy. Nor is it a shield from geopolitical tensions boiling over into nuclear conflict." SOUNDBITE
The UN rights chief warns that the world needs to change paths to avoid a future filled with military escalation, repression, disinformation, deepening inequality and rampant climate change. "We are at a fork in the road: We can either continue on our current path — a treacherous ‘new normal’ — and sleepwalk into a dystopian future, or we can wake up and turn things around for the better, for humanity and the planet," Volker Turk tells the United Nations Human Rights Council.
