Aerial images from Russia's Emergencies Ministry show wildfires set off by explosions at a munitions depot in the Ryazan region southeast of Moscow. More than 2,000 people from nearby villages have been evacuated.
Smoke rises north of Bakhmut close to Soledar, eastern Ukraine, where heavy fighting is taking place as Russian forces try to capture the town. The defence of the village of Paraskoviivka, located north of Bakhmut, is "very strong", according to a senior sergeant who warns that "there can be an operational encirclement of Bakhmut" if the Russian forces take the village and block the road to the town.
A Ukrainian army spokesman has confirmed its forces ceded the eastern town to Russian troops, without specifying when it happened.
Russia on the cusp of scoring its first battlefield win in months using infantry as cannon fodder for the taking of the salt mining town of Soledar. It is a key stepping stone to Bakhmut which then leads to the big rail and road hubs that link the Donbas to the rest of the country. Putin's Wagner mercenaries purportedly posing in the salt mine. They seemed to jump the gun when they started claiming Tuesday that they and they alone had taken Soledar.
The fierce battle for the Ukrainian city of Soledar is ongoing, says a spokesperson for the Russian Defence Ministry, countering an earlier claim by the private military group Wagner that its fighters had taken control of the eastern city.
