This week the House of Representatives returned to Washington for the first time since the election. According to CNN, another election was at the top of their agenda: Speaker of the House. House Democratic leadership elections will be Wednesday and Thursday. They are likely to see the 117th Congress run by the same players. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to hold on to her speakership. She is running unopposed. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and House Majority Whip James Clyburn also do not face challenges. Chairman of the Democratic Caucus Hakeem Jeffries is also running unopposed. Progressives, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are disappointed that attempts at a insurgency against current Democratic never materialized.
US stock markets opened with optimism Tuesday, as tens of millions of Americans head to the polls to decide who will be the next US president. According to Markets Insider, analysts say the upward bounce was a reaction to the end of the uncertainty surrounding who will get the top job. Fundstrat's Tom Lee said in a note to clients on Tuesday that the result would rally stocks, regardless of who won. If Democratic nominee Joe Biden wins, Lee expects a 10% rally. A surprise win for President Donald Trump could jolt stocks 15% to 17% higher. Asset manager BlackRock says that from ending political gridlock to producing sorely needed stimulus packages, the outcome could trigger an upturn.
Judge Amy Coney Barrett is to be the next Supreme Court Justice, filling the seat left by the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Business Insider reports the Senate on Monday voted to confirm Coney Barrett along party lines in a 52-48 vote. Only one Republican, US Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, voted against Barrett's nomination. The 48-year-old was confirmed just eight days before Election Day, and to vociferous opposition from Senate Democrats. To vote in a presidential election, you need to be an American citizen, be at least 18 years old on Election Day, and vote in the state in which you reside.
