Firefighters are deployed in the suburbs of Athens as Greece orders evacuations over ongoing wildfires. Thousands of residents near the Greek capital fled their homes on Monday, including in the historic town of Marathon. According to officials, emergency services are working around the clock with "superhuman" efforts to contain the fires. IMAGES
A forest blaze in Greece is "the largest wildfire ever recorded in the EU" says Balazs Ujvari, a spokesperson for the block, who also announces the mobilisation of nearly half the EU's firefighting air wing to tackle it. Firefighting helicopters drop water on a fire on Greece's Mount Parnitha near Athens, in the largest forest adjoining the capital, threatening a national park for a second day.
