Russian president Vladimir Putin breaks his silence on the plane crash a day earlier that reportedly killed mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin and other senior members of the Wagner paramilitary group. "I have known Yevgeny Prigozhin for a very long time, since the early 1990s," Putin says. "He was a man of complicated fate, and he made serious mistakes in his life, but he achieved the right results."
Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and top officers of his private Wagner military company were presumed dead in a plane crash that was widely seen as the Kremlin's revenge, two months after they staged a mutiny that dented Russian President Vladimir Putin’s authority. FRANCE 24's International Affairs Editor Angela Diffley tells us more.
The head of the Wagner mercenary group, which in June attempted to topple Russia's military leadership, was on board a plane that crashed on Wednesday, with all passengers killed, Russian officials said.
Russian authorities say Prigozhin was one of ten passengers listed for the flight, although it is not yet clear whether he was on board at the time.
